Steal This Amazing Trick To Get Rid Of Diaper Rash In Newborns
First, let me start by saying that as parents, we know the dreaded diaper rash problem all too well. Am I right, or am I right?! It’s uncomfortable and painful on your babe, almost like it creates an extra layer of stress in an already hectic life. But don’t worry – there is a SUPER simple trick to eliminate diaper rash in newborns.
I’m confident this trick will work for you because it worked like a charm for my newborn, Lily Mae! Even though I religiously changed her diapers throughout the day and applied diaper cream during every change, her skin was sensitive (and still is), so the diaper rash came on quickly. It wouldn’t go away UNTIL I discovered this life-changing hack.
And the best part? Drum roll, please…
YOU can whip this up yourself, AND it doesn’t break the bank!
So let’s get to it.

First, What Is Diaper Rash?
If your baby’s booty or private area is red, they likely have diaper rash.
Diaper rash is a form of skin irritation that affects almost every baby at some point. It appears red on the diaper area and can range from mild to severe.
This was the case for my daughter. She developed severe redness all over her diaper area.
Her NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) nurses recommended the ointments I used to treat diaper rash.
These were the diaper treatment methods for our twin girls in the NICU (which I’ll get to in a minute). These ointments worked until the diaper rash problem wouldn’t clear up.
Again, even though I changed my daughter’s diaper frequently AND applied diaper cream as a protective barrier every diaper change, she still developed a diaper rash.
So what in the heck causes it?
The Causes Of Diaper Rash
Let me say this, IF your baby has sensitive skin, they may be more prone to diaper rash, period. Not fun news, I know. BUT on the brighter side, diaper rash usually responds well to diaper creams.
Before we get into the various creams AND the trick that banished my daughter’s diaper rash for good, here are some causes of diaper rash:
- Diaper material is too rough
- Sensitivity to diaper wipes/detergents
- Sensitivity to the ammonia in urine (this was the case for our Lily Mae)
- Soiled diaper
- Warm/moist climates
- Wet diaper
- Yeast or fungal infections
Remember that diaper rash isn’t always caused by a diaper being in contact with the skin for too long – it can happen even when a diaper is changed frequently.
Thankfully, it’s easy to treat!
How To Treat Diaper Rash
Again, diaper rash can be treated quickly with diaper cream. The creams I recommend (the go-to treatment methods for my twins in the NICU) are Aquaphor and Desitin.
Here’s what I currently do for EVERY diaper change…
Baby Aquaphor
First, I apply Baby Aquaphor. This acts as a protective barrier to prevent diaper rash from developing and to protect the skin from urine and poo. I always have a container of this on hand! For my diaper bag, I carry a smaller tube of it.
Desitin
IF either of my girls starts to look red around the diaper area, I immediately switch to Desitin. This is more potent (and a little messier) than Aquaphor but usually does the trick if a diaper rash appears. I’ll use this every change until the diaper area isn’t red. Once my girl’s skin looks normal (not red), I return to Aquaphor.
For an added prevention method, keep the diaper area clean and dry.
Keeping your little one’s diaper area well-ventilated is essential to prevent diaper rash from becoming a bigger problem.
To keep your babe’s diaper area clean and dry, place a new one underneath the bottom and discard the old one. I do this on a playmat to let my daughter’s diaper area dry before applying the diaper cream.
This should only take a couple of minutes to do. Try this at least once or more daily to prevent diaper rash OR to clear up any redness that may start to appear. IF none of these treatment methods work (Baby Aquaphor, Desitin, keeping the diaper area clean and dry), THEN use the trick I’m about ready to share to get rid of diaper rash! Psst, you can also use this trick to prevent future diaper rash too 🙂
We discovered my daughter’s skin was susceptible to the ammonia in her urine, so she needed a more effective diaper cream; hence, I found this AMAZING diaper hack.
The TRICK To Get Rid Of Diaper Rash In Newborns
This ointment will blow your mind (at least it did mine) because it’s SO darn simple and easy to whip up. You may even have your pharmacy mix this together; talk to your pediatrician.
Now, the secret to getting rid of diaper rash in newborns…
Baby Aquaphor + Maalox = BEST diaper cream EVER!
Why Maalox? Because it neutralizes the urine on the skin.
Mix together equal parts into a large gallon zip lock baggie. When you are done mixing it together, it turns into a white creamy mixture like the picture below.
Apply it all over the diaper rash area. It’s also ok to put it on a girl’s vaginal area (I confirmed this with my doctor). They told me it would feel cool on my little one’s skin and help stabilize the burning/redness sensation. You should have a happier baby and a vanishing diaper rash!

When I apply this mixture, it clears my daughter up within 48 hours.
I use this anytime she starts to get red in her diaper area. I apply the Baby Aquaphor and Maalox mixture FIRST; then, I apply just the Baby Aquaphor as a protective barrier over it. You can use this for every diaper change too.
If You’re Concerned…
Always discuss your concerns with a pediatrician or pharmacist to create an effective plan for treating diaper rash should it occur.
When my daughter became red down there and the regular diaper creams weren’t working, I met with her pediatrician. In my mind, I thought she had a yeast infection when in fact, it was a severe diaper rash. So I learned something new that day, what diaper rash was and what it looked like.
So if you’re worried about a diaper rash or think it may be something else, it’s best to seek medical advice!
To Wrap It Up
Keeping unpleasant diaper rash at bay should be the least of your worries. Hopefully, by knowing this trick, you can say goodbye to diaper rash for GOOD. More importantly, have peace of mind knowing your little one won’t have to experience discomfort ever again.
Not only is this hack super easy, but it’s also affordable too! So if you’re entering parenthood or have been a parent for years and have never heard of this tip, I highly recommend trying it. I can attest that it works, and I’m confident it will work for you too. 🙂
Until the next post, I’m sending you all the positive parenting vibes!
