How Salt Room Therapy Is The Ultimate Self-Care Hack For Moms

As a mom, you juggle a thousand things from dawn until dusk; endless to-do lists, diaper changes, school runs, playdates, meal prep, and work deadlines. It can be hard to take a breath, let alone a break. But Mama, you deserve a breather! And, what better place to take one than at a salt cave or salt room? Never heard of it? I’m here to tell you ALL about Salt Room Therapy, including my recent experience. Trust me; it’s the ULTIMATE self-care haven that doesn’t take much time to do. So let’s get to it!

First, What Is Salt Room Therapy?

Salt room therapy, or halotherapy, is a natural therapy involving spending time in a room filled with Himalayan salt crystals.

The salt room is typically dimly lit, with soothing music. The room’s atmosphere is controlled to mimic the microclimate of a natural salt mine, with the air being infused with tiny salt particles that are believed to have healing properties for the skin, respiratory system, and overall wellness.

The Benefits Of Salt Room Therapy

But what if I told you there was a natural way to relieve stress, soothe your skin, and improve overall wellness? It’s true. After spending time in a salt room, many feel more relaxed, calmer, and rejuvenated. That’s just a few of the various benefits salt room therapy provides.

The salt particles are believed to:

  • Clear the respiratory system
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Improve skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema
  • Promote better sleep
  • Decrease stress levels

Additionally, salt therapy’s negative ions are believed to affect mood and overall well-being positively.

How Does It Work?

When you enter a salt room, you’ll notice that the air is infused with tiny salt particles. As you breathe in this salt-infused air, the salt particles travel into your respiratory system, breaking down mucus, reducing inflammation, and potentially improving lung function. The salt particles have been touted to improve circulation, ease joint pain, aid in weight loss, and detoxify your body, making it the ultimate self-care experience.

What To Expect During A Salt Room Therapy Session

A typical salt room session lasts between 30-60 minutes. Many salt rooms offer comfy chairs or loungers to sit and relax in while you soak up the salt therapy. You’ll typically be provided with a blanket or a robe and encouraged to take off your shoes before entering the salt room.

Most people report feeling deeply relaxed during a salt room session, falling asleep, or entering a meditative state. You can expect to leave feeling calmer, more relaxed, and potentially with some improvements to your skin and breathing.

My Salt Therapy Experience

My sister recently surprised me with a salt room therapy session for my birthday at Tranquility Salt Cave. It was my FIRST time going, and let me tell you, it was AMAZING. I enjoyed it so much that I had to write a post about it and tell you all!

The session lasted 45 minutes. Robes were on hand if you wanted one, but we wore comfy casual clothes.

The other people in our session wore similar things, too, casual stuff or workout gear like yoga pants and a comfy top. There were about 8 in total for the session. We were told to bring white socks (my sister had a pair on hand for me) because you walk on a heated floor of salt. Yes, super soothing! There were lounge chairs provided and blankets too. Basically, you pick your seat, kick back, and relax!

When the session began, relaxing music played while tiny salt particles were released into the air.

The ceiling illuminated tiny lights while the walls were covered in pink Himalayan salt with dimly lit lamps built into the wall.

I was a bit nervous breathing in the salt particles, thinking it would make me cough!

It didn’t. Instead, I fell into a meditative state of pure calmness while in and out of sleep. I noticed I was breathing better too.

I have horrible seasonal allergies. The one thing salt room therapy did for me was clear my sinuses for a few days after. I was honestly amazed. The next day, I did experience a light cough but nothing crazy. Just the fact I was breathing better felt wonderful.

Overall, it was an incredible way to unplug and ZEN OUT, making this experience the ultimate self-care hack to do in less than an hour!

While some sessions can be as short as 10-15 minutes, most salt room therapy sessions last around 45 minutes to an hour. It’s important to note that the length of time may also depend on the specific salt room you’re visiting, as each one may implement different time limits for their clients.
